Our Story
Nereidonia began as a single mechanical device in a single narrative. It ended up becoming a civilizational archive. This is how that happened.
Nereidonia began in 2022 with the drafting of The Scarab, a contained maritime narrative built around a single device, a single vessel, and a narrow window of strategic tension. It was intended to be a focused story about ingenuity under pressure: a lensed, clockwork instrument used to anticipate tides and weaponize timing against a superior force. The premise was mechanical, almost austere. No sprawling map. No dynasties. Just a problem and a solution.
But the act of building the device required a culture that could plausibly have designed it. The culture required trade routes. Trade routes required political structure. Political structure required law. Law required philosophy. Philosophy required history. And history, once sketched, refused to remain shallow.
"What began as a short narrative exercise metastasized into civilizational modeling."
By late 2022, Nereidonia had a founding era, a legal doctrine, and a maritime engineering tradition. By 2023, it had institutional structures: the Senate assemblies, the Grand Council of Elders, the evolution of shipyards and foundries, and an economic framework capable of sustaining innovation without collapsing into caricature. The world was no longer a backdrop for a story; the story had become evidence that the world existed.
As the canon expanded, the tone shifted from narrative to archival. Documents emerged that resembled museum placards, judicial transcripts, engineering manuals, and anthropological studies. Nereidonia stopped behaving like a novel and started behaving like a recovered civilization.
The Nereidonia Foundation was established as the interpretive and educational umbrella — to clarify what Nereidonia is and is not: a fictional civilization presented with institutional seriousness, explicitly transparent in its artifice, and committed to intellectual rigor in its construction. The Foundation exists so newcomers are not asked to suspend disbelief blindly but are instead invited into a structured thought experiment.
Then came the decision that altered the trajectory of the project entirely.
If Nereidonia was inspired by real maritime cultures, Indigenous traditions, and global histories, it could not remain purely aesthetic. The Nereidonia Heritage Initiative was created to ensure that a portion of proceeds from the fictional canon would be directed toward real-world cultural and heritage organizations. The project ceased to be solely speculative and became cyclical: imagination generating tangible support.
"From a single mechanical device to a multi-era civilizational archive — each layer was added to resolve a structural need uncovered by the previous one."
The project remains independent and singular in authorship, but its ambition is institutional: to explore how societies design law, technology, memory, and responsibility, and to do so with enough rigor that the exercise feels consequential.
Nereidonia did not begin as a foundation. It began as a question: "What would it take to build a civilization deliberately?" The work since 2022 has been an attempt to answer it.
