Mission and Purpose
To research, preserve, exhibit and communicate the cultural heritage, history and civilization of Nubia. The museum was created following UNESCO’s International Campaign to Save the Monuments of Nubia and opened on 23 November 1997. Available to local Nubian communities and national/international visitors. Languages: Arabic and English signage; some Nubian languages used in interpretive materials.
Impact and Programming
Tens of thousands of visitors annually; UNESCO notes the museum is a central resource for Nubian heritage. By showcasing rescued monuments and artifacts, the museum raises awareness of Nubian culture and supports cultural tourism. UNESCO continues to provide oversight; the museum won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2001. Exhibitions – permanent displays across three floors presenting Nubian pre-history, Pharaonic and Islamic periods, and contemporary Nubian culture.
